Deck & Shingle Maintenance California

Skin Tone

One picture is in the morning sun.  The other is after the sun has moved off the deck.  Just a couple different looks from a couple different times of day.  The beauty of transparent material.  This five year old deck off of Western Avenue near UCSC campus.  It does get direct sun for about four hours per day.  This was our first time washing and staining this particular deck.  This is about what can be expected in terms of color using Redwood Tone-Biowash Natural Deck Oil.

Over the years, the first topic of conversation from the homeowner that calls about their newly constructed ‘hardwood’ deck is that “their” builder said that you don’t need to do anything to it as far as maintenance, and it will last for 50 years.  That is absolutely FALSE!  It should last for 100 years without any maintenance!  It just won’t bead water like this three y/o beauty.

The shingles on the left side of the picture have been washed and stained.  The shingles on the right have only been washed.    Great example of what the natural tone looks like once dry.  As is always the case, the material is Biowash Natural Deck Oil.  These shingles are fifteen years old.  North facing side of the house.

Ipe’ Deck Maintenance.  Aromas, CA 2014

Much has been made over the years regarding the most effective transparent material to use on various hard woods.  Builders are quick to suggest products like Penofin and the like.  Here we see Biowash Natural Deck Oil on an eight year old Ipe Deck in South Santa Cruz County.  Does your hardwood deck look this good?  It could.

These shots tell the story.  Working our way through the sealing process.  This backyard patio in Scotts Valley was poured in 2002.  It may have been sealed at that point.  Fast forward a dozen years.  It was pretty dirty and in need of some maintenance.  After the wash, we double coated using Glaze n Seal ‘Wet Look 2000’.  The product is costly, but obviously the results can be extraordinary.

New Build.  Summer 2011.

August 2012                                                                    June 2013

You would be looking at a picture that actually does justice to how well these rails turned out.  This is a Scotts Valley deck built in the summer of 2010.  The product is Biowash Natural Deck Oil.  The flavor is Honey Brown.  Tasty!

These ten or so boards that receive heavy foot and paw traffic need annual maintenance.  What’s amazing is how light the non stained boards now look by comparison.  Before these boards were stained(Biowash Natural Deck Oil-Redw Tone) they were noticeably lighter than the ones that now look considerably lighter.  By the end of summer, it should all even out again.

The inside story about this 5000 s/f custom home in the Wolfe Estates area of Donner Lake, CA, is that the builder of the home supposedly put on 80 gallons of water based transparent stain prior to it being constructed.  Knowing what I now know about the complexities of the ladder work that it takes to efficiently apply stain to this home, staining it prior to being built seemed like a rather smart idea.  So when the client told me that she was pretty sure that there was no stain left on the siding and that she was sure that it needed it re-application, my initial hunches were that either A.  The person(s) applying the supposed 80 gallons of transparent stain at $40 per gallon forgot to stir the material, or B.  The transparent material was applied in too cold of an environment.  Supposedly, the wood had been kiln dried, or that certainly would have contributed to  product failure.  I was called to this home in late June 2012, and she was right.  It was as dry as a popcorn fart.  I was able to reapply 70 gallons.  The builder was still around doing odds and ends during the time that I was beginning this process.  Even he said that it never looked the way I made it look, and was happy that his construction was being buckled up prior to the upcoming winter.
